Hardy country

Thomas Hardy , novelist, short story writer, and poet of the naturalist movement, drew much of the inspiration for his powerful story lines and intense characters from the glorious unchanging countryside of Dorset . The famous writer was born in 1840 at a thatched cottage at Higher Bockhampton near Dorchester .

Dorchester s Dorset County Museum counts among its displays a number of memorabilia devoted to Hardy , including the original script of The Woodlanders . Also found there is the Athelhampton House , a fine example of an early Tudor mansion which has been restored after a devastating fire in 1992.
