Originally built in 1897 as a home for Sir Merton and Lady Annie Russell-Cotes , the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum was handed to the Bournemouth Borough Council upon their death. Now open to the public free of charge, it boasts of a substantial collection of art, furniture, ceramics, and other interesting objects and artifacts.
Among the museum s most important features is the Café at the Russell-Cotes . Set in a unique, light and airy space designed by five regionally based craftspeople, The Café offers freshly prepared, imaginative food and beverages with daily specials. You can also take the lift en route to its Japanese gallery, the core of which was formed by Sir Merton and Lady Russell-Cotes during their visit to Japan in 1885. It also houses a children's art gallery called Stories, Voices, Journeys .

The Bournemouth Aviation Museum was established in 1999 out of the former Classic Jets Museum . Today, it houses a range of flying and static airframes from the 1950s and 1960s. On display in its model room are more than 600 military aircraft models, including the last surviving airworthy de Havilland Sea Vixen .
The museum also features a wooded picnic area which is ideal for watching the aircraft on display. It also has a gift shop, which offers a choice of refreshments, canned drinks and sweets.

The Red House was originally built as the Parish Workhouse in 1764. More than a century later, a noted local collector by the name of Herbert Druitt opened the Red House as a private museum in 1919. It eventually became a public museum in 1952.
The Red House Museum and Gardens now houses an interactive archaeology gallery, the Bygones Gallery, the Hart Gallery, and the Herbert Druitt Costume Gallery , which celebrates fashionable attire from the Victorian era to Edwardian times. Also on display in a 1930s room setting are furniture created by Arthur Romney Green of the Arts & Crafts Movement .

Located in a structure dating from the 1800s called Oakley s Mill , the Waterfront Museum is dedicated to tracing the 2000 fascinating years of Poole s history. From the Iron Age to the Roman occupation, from trade with Newfoundland to the Studland Bay Wreck , the museum s exhibits on these topics are displayed in a lively manner that would interest people from all walks of life. Also incorporated within the museum is the Local History Centre , which offers research facilities on the history of the town and its people.

Set in a genuine Edwardian power station , The Museum of Electricity in Bargates is the place to go to when you want to learn all about the history of electricity supply. Only five walking minutes away from High Street , the museum features plenty of hands-on experiments, as well as a popular demonstration gallery which ties in with the National Curriculum . It boasts of a unique collection of electrical memorabilia, ranging from an original 1911 Bournemouth tram and other miscellaneous items from the turn of the century to the present day.
